  21. PURPOSE
  22. ~~~~~~~
  23. This document provides guidance for SYSOPS and individuals who are 
  24. members of the International Genealogy Association (IGA) and who 
  25. participate in the electronic network operated by the IGA: the 
  26. IGA_Net<tm>. The IGA is a professional, nonprofit association 
  27. of genealogists.

  29. MEMBERSHIP
  30. ~~~~~~~~~~
  31. Participation  in IGA_Net<tm> is gained by completing a membership 
  32. application and submitting it, either directly or indirectly 
  33. through a IGA_Net Host, to the Zone Coordinator, IGA_Net<tm>.
  34. There are two types of  membership: SYSOP and PRIVATE.
  35.  
  36. A SYSOP is the operator of a bulletin board (BBS) which carries 
  37. genealogical conferences for the use of callers. The bulletin board 
  38. operates and is accessible 24 hours per day except during Zone Mail 
  39. Hour and during normal maintenance. There are no restrictions on 
  40. the use of off-line readers (OLR's). 
  41.  
  42. Persons who are PRIVATE members do not operate a bulletin board but 
  43. use the information in genealogical conferences furnished by the 
  44. IGA_Net<tm> for personal research purposes. The PRIVATE member can 
  45. receive traffic on all the echoes authorized a SYSOP member.

  47. There are no dues or fees associated with participating in IGA or 
  48. IGA_Net(tm).

  51. PROCEDURE FOR JOINING IGA (IGA_Net<tm>
  52. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  53. A SYSOP (or PRIVATE node) should first (electronically) obtain a 
  54. membership application from a Host in the IGA_Net<tm> or from the Zone 
  55. Coordinator, IGA_Net<tm>. The application should be completed and 
  56. returned to the Host from whence it came. The Host will assign the new 
  57. member a node number and will (electronically) forward the completed 
  58. membership application to the  Zone Coordinator of IGA_Net<tm>, 
  59. 440:1/1. The Zone Coordinator reserves the privilege of final approval 
  60. for any applicant. Applicants who are known to be trouble-makers will 
  61. *not* be approved for membership in IGA.

  63. RULES FOR THE VARIOUS IGA_Net<tm> CONFERENCES

  65. Current rules for all IGA_Net<tm> echomail conferences are contained 
  66. in the RULES.ZIP file, which is contained in the IGA-INFO packet.

  68. AVAILABLE FACILITIES

  70. The IGA_Net furnishes conferences as listed in the current IGA-ECHO.TXT 
  71. file which is also contained in the IGA-INFO packet.

  73. PERIODS OF INOPERATION
  74. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  75. Downlinks are required to notify (by direct netmail or voice phone) 
  76. their feeding BBS when their board is expected to be, or is actually, 
  77. down for a period in excess of 24 hours. If the board is expected to be 
  78. inoperative (or has been inoperative) for a period in excess of 48 
  79. hours, the Nodelist Coordinator (440:1/2) will be notified by direct 
  80. netmail of the board's inoperability and the prognosis for recovery. 
  81. Boards inoperable for periods in excess of 48 hours will be marked 
  82. "down" in the next published nodelist. A board marked "down" will 
  83. normally be removed from the nodelist after a period of four weeks. 
  84. The person's membership will be inactivated in such case. A new 
  85. membership application must be submitted by a person who has been 
  86. removed from the nodelist under these conditions. The only way to have 
  87. the designation "down" removed from a nodelist entry is by direct 
  88. netmail notification to the IGA_Net Nodelist Coordinator (440:1/2). 
  89. The person who is marked "down" is responsible for providing this 
  90. notification.

  92. If an uplink notices that a downlink has not polled as per an
  93. agreed schedule, the uplink will attempt to contact the offending
  94. downlink and determine the reason. In the absence of a good reason
  95. it is possible to have the non-polling person's membership 
  96. inactivated. The point is, you are required to poll your uplink
  97. at the times agreed upon. To not do so is viewed with a very
  98. jaundiced eye.
